After years of instability, the Russian Federation collapsed into civil war, lasting from 2038 to 2042. While the main battles were fought over the new federal government, the Republic of Greater Tatarstan and the Tuvan Republic declared their independence. A new government dedicated to preserving the beliefs of Vladimir Putin was established in the central city of Novosibirsk, and later the Second Russian Federation declared independence. Norway, Finland, Ukraine, Turkey, China, and Japan annexed large portions of the country. In order to solve a dispute between China and Japan before it turned violent, the Democratic Republic of Yakutia was set up by the CANZUK Union.
